The Convolve of Hope Executive Summary

In Nigeria, a majority of women struggle with poverty, lack of education, and constraints on their decision-making power regarding their own reproductive and sexual health.  The Convolve of Hope Initiative, the non-governmental organization working to eradicate Traditional Practices Affecting  the Health of Women and Girls has for over the years been engaged in a campaign of education, sensitization, and activism aimed at eliminating harmful traditional practices, focusing in particular on abolishing Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and early marriage, as well as promoting education and empowerment for women and girls.

One of the major strengths of Convolve of Hope Initiative – COHi is its sustained efforts over time and the consistency of its approach and message. While methodology has been adapted over time (as well as from one community to another, depending on need), the basic mandate has remained the same, and no effort is made to conceal the true agenda of the organization. While in the past COHi has often been the target of criticism, insults, and even threats, it appears that over time a major shift has taken place in public awareness and attitudes, and that the overall impression of the organization is positive.
Although methodological trends in anti-FGM interventions come and go, the patient consistency of COHi’s approach appears to be paying off, as many beneficiaries explained that “change takes time,” but that they are now ready to consider COHi’s message.
